July 2022

In the July edition of The Hedge we take stock of the June numbers and look at some of the other stories in the alternative space.

This month saw Bridgewater shorting European stocks, a return of the black swan funds, Brookfield’s new $15bn impact fund, time’s up for Ackman’s SPAC, Elliott selling AC Milan, Qatar backing Diamond, activists join Toshiba and so much more. We look at PE funds focusing in on UK firms, the rise of Asian activism, questions over shorting and ESG, and get some tips from Carlyle’s David Rubenstein on PE investing. There is also plenty of news from the world of crypto.

As always, we have the excellent Matt Raver from RQC providing his regulatory update.

This month, we wanted to hear different perspectives on ESG, given there have been very real concerns in recent months about greenwashing, and some sensible thinking on crypto.  To give us this, we were exceptionally lucky to have Lucian Firth from Simmons & Simmons, writing about what Article 8 actually means, and Nick Walford, co-founder at Perigon Partners on the curse of greenwashing. While Lou LaValle of 3iQ Corp sets out a staunch defence of crypto and Vincent Molino, from Bitwise Asset Management, walks us through the importance of risk management in digital assets.
